Soy Free
You may be wondering why Nogürt proudly advertizes it is soy free. After all, we have come to associate soy with health foods. But is it really healthy for you?
Soy is actually the 7th most common cause of food allergies and intolerances in people - just behind dairy, peanuts, wheat and shellfish! Consuming soy can cause a number of immediate hypersensitivities and anaphylactic reactions.
While consuming small amounts of fermented soy may be acceptable, consuming larger amounts of unfermented soy may be harmful to your health and the environment. In fact, Eastern diets average less than 20 grams of soy per day – that is roughly one tenth of the size of a 6oz. yogurt cup.
By contract in the United States, soy or a soy derivative is in over 60 percent of all packaged foods on your grocery store shelf or in the restaurants you visit. Our culture now consumes soy at an alarming and unprecedented pace. Because of our escalated use of soy it should come as no surprise that the main reason rain forests and old-growth forests are eradicated around the world is for the growth of soy beans. We consume so much soy, our dietary demands have caused potentially irreparable harm to our environment.
Moreover, 30 years of scientific study has shown that eating soy, especially larger amounts, is likely harmful to humans. Eating larger amounts of soy causes hormonal imbalance. Trusted medical and dietary institutions advise against allowing children to eat soy and for adult men and non-menopausal women to drastically limit consumption, as soy is rich in phyto-estrogens, a plant based estrogen hormone. In fact, the phyto-estrogen in infant soy formula has been linked to autoimmune thyroid disease. Numerous scientific studies have also shown consumption of larger quantities of soy is linked to increased risk for breast, digestive tract and thyroid cancers as well as infertility in women.
In addition to these potential dangers from soy products, did you know 90% of soy used in making non-organic foods is genetically modified (GMO), carrying another set of health and environmental problems. Amazingly, upwards of 20 percent of soy sold as organic has also been shown to actually be GMO.
Eating a cup of healthy Nogürt is a great way enjoy a soy-free diet.
